The Windies were a decent side then, you had SA England, NZ and Oz, India and Pakistan were also decentish by then, but that's besides the point he was still tested by the best batsmen of the day as a bowler and as a batsman, his average is up there with all the greats bar Bradman

cough - was sobers really tested? obviously not his fault that he played at a time when only the aussies, windies and england were playing at a decent level....perhaps not even the windies were at that time.
by the 80s, these 3 were joined by india, pak, n zealand...sri lanka were finding their feet. SA still excluded.
point being that the international standard was higher in the 80s than 60s/early 70s....

agreed swiss...the 80s all rounders (khan, hadlee, botham & dev) can rightly say they performed at a time when the standard & intensity was v high,
the windies were at their peak at the time and their fearsome batting & bowling line ups negated the need for a real all rounder (6 world class batsmen/wk & 4 wicket taking bowlers) - viv richards occasional off spin sorted out their 5th/change bowler if required, roger harper also played the 'all rounder' role when required.

I think any of the famous allrounders of the 80s could get inro todays sides. In fact the pitches are definately better today. Sobers no way so he's out.

Simon O'Donnell wasn't much of a Test cricketer but he did reach the level of ODI World Cup winner vs England in 1987 dismissing Gooch in the final.
He was on the Channel 9 sports team for a long time and I think he now breeds horses.
The ones that run in races not the dancing ones that are so loved by certain suspect individuals.

Some of the comments about Botham not being about averages (and hence being more of a match winner) are interesting. I saw him speak as a lad. I've never encountered a more electric presence.
Like when he when out to bat, swinging his arm, Energy, physical presence (he really was a big fucker) and utterly imbued with self confidence. You can have all the technique you like, and some of his batting was comical, but if chuck in unshakeable self-belief, well...

He had cancer...never quite reached a great level but was around playing in the 80s
